Juried Critique Rules

  • Paid member may enter one work of art. They can be any “two-dimensional” traditional medium (including collage), produced within the last twelve months
  • All submitted art must be in gallery-ready condition, properly framed (no shadow boxes or heavily ornate) with wire hanging (no sawtooth). Watercolors, pastels, photography, and digital art must be framed (including glass or plexiglass), no cardboard backing. Any medium on canvas is acceptable without a frame, providing it is dry and has a full “gallery wrap.” (The painting must continue around the edges and be neatly attached at the back.) Collage must fit into a standard-depth, two-dimensional art frame.
  • Pastels may be submitted with a “French Wrap” mounting (the pastel painting is placed directly against the glass surface and bound with clear tape, then mounted in a frame. Tape must not show from the front side.)
  • Art submissions for the quarterly critique must be delivered to the site between 6:15 pm and 6:45 pm that evening. Late arrivals will not be accepted into the critique. Due to time limits, approximately 32 artworks will be selected for that evening’s critique. Once a artwork has been critiqued, it may not be submitted again.
  • Photography and digital art will be considered a separate competition. Paintings will be critiqued without regard to categories. At each quarterly critique, one photograph or digital art and six paintings will be awarded ribbons. Quarterly winning photographs and digital art can compete for Photograph of the Year, and quarterly winning paintings can compete for The Painting of the Year chosen by a juror at the annual Banquet.
  • If a winning quarterly painting is sold prior to the banquet, the artist is permitted to submit a gallery ready (as above) print of that same painting for entry into the Painting of the Year competition. Art work brought after deadline specified for the Banquet will not be accepted.
  • Artists must be present at the critiques, including the Banquet, to qualify for ribbons. Artist(s) winning ribbons at the Annual Banquet will receive a cash prize and a SOSA membership for the following year.

  Please Note:

  • All work must be the actual, one-of-a-kind original (no prints).
  • Art work copied from other artists or published photographs will not be accepted.
  • Paintings submitted from classroom or workshops will not be accepted
  • Include a critique submission form with the artwork. The form is available at the meetings (A SAMPLE is in the back of this yearbook) or  Click here for Critique form
